New Adoption Legislation
Chapter 509 of the Laws of New York State was passed into law on 9/17/10 allowing unmarried couples, including same sex couples, to adopt jointly in New York State. In his approval memo Governor Patterson noted that the new legislation, amending Article 7 of the Domestic Relations Law, ensures fairness and equal treatment to families that are ready, willing and able to provide a child with a loving home; and is a a wise, just, and compassionate measure that expands the rights of New Yorkers, without in any way treading on the views of any citizen or organization. The law is effective immediately.
